About Austin
I'm Austin Gilkey, founder and landscape designer behind Golden Grove Design Co. My path into landscape design has taken me from hands-on landscape installation and maintenance, through professional landscape architecture practices, and into ecological and permaculture design.
Each step has shaped my approach to designing landscapes today—combining the technical foundation of landscape architecture, the practical knowledge of working in the field, and an understanding of the living systems that help landscapes thrive.
In my free time, I love staying active! If I’m not walking my golden retriever, Hydra, you can typically find me hiking, rock climbing, on any golf course (ball or disc golf), travelling to a neat destination, hanging out with friends and family, or taking pictures of plants.
My Journey
2016-2017
Where it Started
My foundation was set in high school where I learned AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suites which I now use every day.
2018-2022
College Years
I received my Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture through the College of Engineering Knowlton School of Architecture. I learned the core landscape design principles and technical skills.
2019
Industry Intro
Following my long caddying career, I joined the grounds crew. I maintained planting beds and learned my way around landscape tools and equipment.
2020-2021
Field Experience
I worked on the landscape crews where I tilled, graded, and planted beds while learning plant ID to prune plants properly. I transitioned to the design office where I drafted CAD plans, calculated
project takeoffs, and performed on-site
project prep.
2022
Professional Design Experience
Working on a variety of projects such as university master plans, public parks, & mixed-use developments, I performed studies of site structures, materials, and planting through hand sketching and 3D modeling. I also played an
integral role in the firm’s PHS Flower Show Exhibit.
2023-2024
Growing as Designer
I worked on the entire design and construction process. This includes client consultations, design presentations, detailed construction drawing sets, plant and hardscape layouts, estimating,
contractor & material coordination, etc.
2023-2024
Permaculture & Ecology
I completed my Permaculture Design Certification course where I learned the holistic design process prioritizing observation and how to design regenerative natural & edible landscape systems.
2024-2026
Honing my Skills
I worked on residential development projects where I produced concept plans, hand and digital renderings, landscape plan submittals, estimates, and zoning code outlines. I also managed several projects,
presented updates to clients, and
coordinated deliverable timelines.
Now
My Own Practice
With my eyes set on starting my own company someday, I spent the last 8 years soaking in every experience by observing the way each firm operated, asking endless questions, and wearing as many hats as I could. Golden Grove Design Co. is the culmination of everything I learned along the way packaged into a practice that reflects what I care about and how I see the world.
My Approach
I believe great design starts with observation.
Every property has its own opportunities, challenges, and story. Whether you want to create a beautiful place to relax, attract pollinators, or grow food, I take the time to understand your goals and how you want to use the space.
I believe we value landscapes around us when we become personally connected to them. By combining your goals with intentional design, we can create outdoor spaces that support your lifestyle, foster meaningful connections with the people you love, and ultimately get you outside!
Curious about my work?
The projects shown represent work completed throughout my education and professional career.
Golden Grove Design Co. is currently building its own portfolio of native, edible, and regenerative landscape projects.
