Creative Privacy in an Urban Lot
Logan Square/Humboldt Park, Chicago, IL (In Progress)
Immediately after purchasing this home, this client couldn’t ignore a neighboring structure that is, to put it lightly, an eyesore. Originally inquiring about evergreen trees along the fenceline, I felt it was advantageous to think outside the box about ways to screen this monstrosity. Visible from inside and outside on a few different levels, the goal was to create redundancy.
The solution involved adding screening and visual weight from several different angles. Wooden slat screen on the deck, lighting arbors on both the deck and patio levels with string lights suspended between, a calculated evergreen wall to intentionally block slight lines where necessary, and a canopy tree in the yard to help screen and tuck the yard in from above. Aside from the utilitarian qualities of this planting, native perennials and grasses will add year-round seasonal color and texture to ultimately give character to this urban backyard!
